Pre- and post-operative care

Understand what to expect when undergoing jaw, teeth extraction or dental implant surgery.

We know that undergoing any type of surgical procedure can be daunting – it’s why we want you to fully understand what to expect before and after your procedure. Our support team is also here to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Pre-operative instructions

Your surgeon will provide you with a list of instructions specific to your surgery, but these are some general guidelines we ask our patients to follow:

  • If you require a general anaesthetic, your fitness for your anaesthetic will be assessed and a pre-operative consultation and physical examination prior to your surgical procedure may be required.
  • Stop smoking at least two weeks before the surgery and for three weeks afterwards. Smoking impairs healing and increases the risk of post-operative infection.
  • Depending on the procedure, you will be advised to organise a lift home, as you cannot drive after surgery.

Post-operative instructions

After surgery, our most important goal is to ensure that you’re comfortable and you heal as quickly as possible.

Depending on your procedure, you may require follow-up work; this will be outlined in your treatment plan.
