Initial consultation

We understand that everyone’s condition, needs and goals are different. It’s the reason why we assess your issues in depth and evaluate your concerns in our initial consultation.

When it comes to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach simply doesn’t apply. Your condition, issue or concern is unique to you, as is your medical history and genetic make-up. In the initial consultation, our skilled team will examine every aspect of your condition to recommend the best treatment strategy to address your needs.

What we do in the initial consultation

Not sure what to expect in the initial consultation? At Precision OMS, our specialists will ensure you leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis and a recommended treatment plan.

But first, we need to perform a detailed examination of your condition. To do this, we will:

  • Ask you about your dental and medical history: Please come prepared to discuss your health history and any issues you have had with your teeth, mouth or jaws. We need this information to pre-empt any potential problems and understand your ability to successfully heal after your procedure. It allows us to plan the best possible treatment.
  • Review X-rays or CT scans: We’ll examine your existing x-rays and scans. If required, we may undertake further tests or imaging in our rooms.
  • Examine the affected area: Your surgeon will inspect your face and jaws. Depending on your concern, we may take facial measurements, take photographs, use video imaging or recommend further x-rays. State-of-the-art technology enables us to truly understand the anatomic and structural issues that relate to your condition, as well as what is required for successful treatment.
  • Assess your face and oral cavity: Your surgeon may assess whether your teeth fit together correctly. The use of digital intra-oral scanning allows us to assess the movements required to optimise your bite, but in some cases we may decide to make plaster models of your teeth to assist with treatment planning.
  • Recommend a treatment plan: Following our assessment, we create a treatment plan that outlines our approach to your issue, including any recommended surgery, fees and follow-up procedures. In complex cases, we may need to evaluate your issues further in a second consultation before recommending a treatment plan. If the issue is simple, however – such as a single tooth extraction – we may perform the procedure on the day of the initial consultation.
